Proposal for a new Special Interest Group (SIG) Accounting for Indigenous Perspectives SIG We are thrilled to announce the proposal for the AFAANZ Accounting for Indigenous Perspectives Special Interest Group (SIG).
The SIG is dedicated to promoting the inclusion, representation, and empowerment of First Nations Peoples in the global accounting and finance sectors through research and collaboration with Indigenous and non-Indigenous Academics and Practitioners. We aim to address the complex challenges facing contemporary Australia and New Zealand, offering sustainable solutions that uplift Indigenous communities while contributing to the broader social, economic, and cultural fabric of the nation.
Our mission is aligned with key goals such as the Closing the Gap targets, which address critical disparities in health, education, and economic opportunities for Indigenous communities. In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we focus on providing equitable access to quality education (SDG 4), fostering decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), and striving for reduced inequalities (SDG 10) by breaking down barriers that hinder First Nations Peoples’ professional success. Moreover, we are committed to peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16) by advocating for policies and practices that promote reconciliation, social justice, and respect for Indigenous rights (UNDRIP).
- Promote Indigenous Perspectives in Accounting and Finance
Advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge, values, and practices in accounting and finance education, research, and professional practice, ensuring the voices and perspectives of First Nations Peoples are recognized and valued. - Building Supportive Partnerships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Academia, Industry and Practitioners
Establish strong partnerships with Indigenous organisations, academic institutions, industry leaders, practitioners and community groups to amplify the impact of Indigenous-led research, projects, and advocacy within the accounting and finance sectors. - Influence Policy and Research
Advocate for policy changes that support Indigenous economic empowerment and drive forward research that integrates Indigenous knowledge systems with mainstream accounting and finance practices. - Encourage Indigenous Student Pathways
Increase Indigenous participation in accounting and finance education by promoting pathways, scholarships, and mentorship opportunities that support Indigenous students in pursuing careers across the profession. - Foster Indigenous Economic Empowerment and Self-determination
Promote initiatives that support Indigenous entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and community-based economic development, contributing to the long-term financial sustainability and self-determination of Indigenous communities - Promote Cultural Diversity Awareness and Inclusion
Facilitate cultural diversity awareness programs and workshops that educate and build cultural safety for non-Indigenous members of the accounting and finance professions on the importance of Indigenous perspectives and the role they can play in fostering greater inclusion and understanding.
To express your interest in joining the Accounting for Indigenous Perspectives SIG, please email info@afaanz.org with your interest. We eagerly await your involvement in this pivotal initiative. |

CA ANZ and the University sector have formed a partnership to conduct research to produce an annual benchmark report for Australian and RoW listed companies of the normal, high, and low values of the key ratios that measure a company's performance and overall financial position that can be used to evaluate growth and margins, working capital management, capital structure and liquidity and overall performance (e.g. ROE, ROIC, EBIT margin, quick ratio, interest coverage, leverage and so on).
The benchmark report will be useful for teaching students in regard to understanding and analysing performance of firms, using financial reports, and as an input for tutorial and assignment questions.
